Meet the team

A team of ten will be travelling to Serugeme, Rwanda, in June for two weeks to build a suspended footbridge for the local community. The diverse project team consists of five team members from Mott MacDonald and five team members from Balfour Beatty. Read about our team below.

Tim Smith – Project Manager

Tim is a project manager at Mott MacDonald with extensive experience delivering complex projects in the water and power sectors. As an active STEM Ambassador supporting local schools in the UK, he hopes to spend some of his time in Rwanda with local schools to introduce the children tothe Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths elements that are involved in constructing Serugeme bridge. Outside of work, Tim enjoys numerous outdoor activities including scubadiving, sailing, climbing, and caving.  

Simon Fraser – Construction Coordinator

Simon is a Civil Engineer with over 35 years working on UK Construction and CivilEngineering Projects. He currently supports the mobilisation of projects across Balfour Beatty.  Simon recently gained his 4th Dan in Aikido after visiting Japan last year, and is a Sport for England Level 2 coach. No stranger to raising money for charity, Simon has run two marathons as part of a Balfour Beatty team in NewYork in 2002 and London in 2007, raising over £6,000 for cancer relief. Simon is thrilled to be the Serugeme team and is looking forward to achieving a great outcome!

Dan Darkin – Logistics Coordinator

Dan is a graduate civil engineer, currently working in the maritime structures andgeotechnical team at Mott MacDonald. Outside of work, Dan plays touch rugby for a Glasgow club, is a keen surfer, and loves exploring the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Dan is very excited to be involved in this project, as growing up in Tanzania and having family living in Malawi and South Africa, he has a special relationship with this part of Africa. This knowledge and experience of organising trips will come in handy as logistics coordinator!

Jack Watts – Health & Safety Manager

Jack is a construction manager, specialising in mechanical, electrical and plumbing, working for Balfour Beatty on a residential tower in east London. He is looking forward to putting what he’s learnt from the industry into practice in Rwanda to help create a real, lasting, positive impact to a community with the rest of the team and B2P. Jack’s biggest interests outside of work lie in learning and new experiences, which range from learning German and the guitar to boxing,golf, travelling and experiencing new places and cultures. He also enjoys reading and follows several sports, including football, rugby and the NFL.

Anna Wallin – Communications Coordinator

Anna is an economic consultant in Mott MacDonald’s Economic & Social Development team. She has a keen interest in the economic and social impacts that infrastructure can have on the communities it serves. Anna recently finished a part-time Masters degree in International Development: Environment, Climate Change and Development at the University of Manchester and is looking forward to putting some of what she has learnt into practice in Rwanda. Outside of work, Anna enjoys travelling, reading, walking and swimming. She is also passionate about the environment and conservation, and has spent time volunteering at Mkuze Game Reserve in South Africa.

Naila Akram – Community Engagement

Naila’s role at Balfour Beatty means she works with communities to deliver Community Engagement projects, including school and college engagement, STEM and Construction workshops, recruitment and management of apprenticeship programmes and supporting social enterprise initiatives.  Outside of work, Naila is an active member of her community volunteers on a number of Boards and Charitable Trusts. She has a passion for making outdoor spaces and sports facilities accessible to people from all backgrounds.

Skye Dick – Team Member

Skye is a graduate civil / structural engineer at Mott MacDonald, currently based in the Buildings and Infrastructure Sector. She has a strong interest in the built environment, both within and outside work and is passionate about promoting careers in STEM. In her spare time, Skye likes to travel, hike (she is currently attempting to climb all the Munros in Scotland), running, cooking and is currently learning Spanish.

Holly Jones-Dalton – Team Member

Holly started at Balfour Beatty in June 2018 as a Design Graduate. She recently finished a full time BEng degree in Civil Engineering and is currently undertaking a part-time distance learning MSc in Civil Engineering and Construction Management. When not working or studying, Holly likes to travel, read and restore her classic beetle.

Matt Baston – Team Member

Matt works as a Section / Senior Engineer for Balfour Beatty’s Major Projects department. His work involves coordinating various site teams to deliver to programme and quality standards, as well as being responsible for key technical aspects. Outside of work, Matt enjoys 5-aside football, tennis and the occasional gym session. He lives in Devon, so spends a lot of time exploring the South West coastline for good beaches. Matt is also in the Army Reserves.

Josh Lynch – Team member

Josh is a Chartered Civil Engineer in Mott MacDonald’s Buildings and Infrastructure team. Josh has experience in the analysis, design and detailing of bespoke engineering solutions from concept to completion for projects. Having developed key skills in the construction industry and attaining chartership, Josh is keen to share his experiences with the B2P team in Rwanda and is excited to help deliver such a positive piece of infrastructure for the local community. Outside of work, Josh enjoys travelling and exploring national heritage sites, as well as photography, drawing and playing boardgames.
